Property Overview

Many of the fine mansions and great architecture in the history of Boston were built between 1805-1840 in what marks the city’s premier locations. Alexander Parris designed 39 Beacon on the incline of fashionable Beacon Hill for Nathan Appleton with the wealth of Lowell Mills. The light-filled Greek revival interiors provided a spectacular space for Appleton to entertain such literary giants as Edgar Allen Poe. Appleton's daughter, Fanny, was married to Henry Wadsworth Longfellow in the second floor reception room. Later, an extension was added to the rear of the house overlooking the garden, and in 1888 a fourth story was added to the property.

This elegant residence was extensively and meticulously renovated after it was occupied by the Woman’s City Club of Boston, while retaining the exquisite elegance and period detail of the one-of-a-kind mansion.
